After the love of Flynn Booner’s life leaves him, he takes part in an exchange program for firefighters and finds himself in New York. The last person he expects is the one man who left him, Dr. David Ennis. David is not out to anyone, and tries to stay in the closet and away from Flynn. However that does not work, so he tries to keep the relationship between them as a short term affair. But when Flynn gets hurt things turn on its head.
The beginning of the story leaves you wondering how this book will turn out. It appears a recipe for disaster. By the end of the first chapter, I could not wait to finish the book. The world the author created was very realistic including a sense of time and location that help create a vivid picture of what the author was describing. I was easily pulled into the world the author created. The pace of the story was steady and fast from the first page to the last. The main characters and the secondary characters were stimulating and believable. I loved how both Flynn and David each had faults that they had to deal with - making them each realistic.
The story point of view alternated between Flynn and David but mainly stayed with Flynn. This gives the reader glimpses inside both characters. The changing point of view was done with care so the reader did not get lost or repeat story lines. The main conflict of the story is the relationship between Flynn and David. I enjoyed how they could not stay away from each other and they both loved each other. It was easy to see Flynn was not happy with David trying to stay in the closet but was willing to work with it. The characters fit well into the story. The level of conflict is perfect and any more would have detracted from the overall storyline. The dialogue between the characters was honest and unique. The characters voice matched not only the setting but fit their overall personality. The ending was a bit rushed and I would have liked a slower and more detailed picture of how things were going to work out between Flynn and David. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.
He’d walk through fire for the doctor who once broke his heart
Six months after having his heart broken, Australian firefighter Flynn Boomer is ready to live again. As part of a firefighter exchange program, he finds himself in New York. The last person he expects to see on his first day with Ladder Co. 42 is the man whom Flynn came out for: Dr. David Ennis—who left him without a word after their first public kiss.
Flynn makes David feel more alive, more real than he’s ever felt before. But can David deal with the rest of the world knowing? Determined to deny Flynn’s existence, David fights his own feelings. But no matter how terrified he is at the thought of his secret being discovered, he can’t stay away from the Australian.
Flynn can no more deny David than he can deny breath, but the thought of living a lie with him tears him apart. Love is powerful, but will it be enough?
