Eight Ways to Ecstasy

Art of Passion , #2

Eight Ways to Ecstasy is well-written, poetic in its prose, lush in its imagery and the characterizations are so vivid I could imagine I could feel their emotions hovering in the air between me and the book.

But I didn't love it.

I might have mentioned in the review of the first book that I thought Kate was a coward. Unfortunately, she remains a coward for most of the second book as well, although readers might be pleased to note that there is a HEA at the end of this book. Thank goodness.

Part of my issue is that Kate never comes out and says what the issue is. Rylan not telling her things? Well, yeah, it's a big deal, but it's not as big a deal as she keeps trying to make it and to a certain extent it felt like she was punishing Rylan for her inability to trust. I didn't love Kate in the first book and I don't really think I like her in this one.

Yes, it's realistic. Yes, mental traumas take more than a bit of love to get over, Yes to all of that, but on the other hand, when I read romance, I want to fall in love and be in love and be persuaded that love can truly be something greater than yourself. Kate kept saying that she loved Rylan, but I just never saw it. It felt more like something she used to punish herself and him than anything else.

And there's a lot of issues floating around that weren't really addressed head on. They didn't really even properly hash out what the problem was until about 77% into the book, which for me came a bit too late.

It felt like they kept dancing their way around the real issues and never quite talking straight about them.

I liked the previous book. I like Eight Ways to Ecstasy. However, I'm not in love because I need more proof of love, more being in love in a book. I dislike the "angst all the way to the HEA" style of story and I'm, again, resenting the word real estate that the sex takes up in this book. Recommended, with reservations.
