The Wild Card

Harlequin Blaze #594

Seth McCutcheon is at his mother’s bedside playing poker with her as she’s dying. As they’re spending time together, she tells him her final wish. The wish is that she would like him to there for his abandoned sister and nephew. Not wanting to disappoint his mother and not fulfill her wish, he leaves the military to care for his sister and nephew. He’s hired by Ranger Security and his first assignment is to provide protection for Trent McWilliams of the Orlando Mustangs football team. It seems that a stalker has threatened Seth’s client saying that they’ll wreck the star quarterback’s wedding ceremony. So Seth goes undercover as the boyfriend to Penelope Hart, an Atlanta based wedding planner.

As the wedding plans move forward, Seth and Penelope become closer as the hours pass. Their attraction for one another can’t be denied, but they know that Seth’s mission is a priority over all else. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and they start falling for each other. But will starting a relationship really be the smartest thing for the both of them right now? Is Seth able to divert any mishaps during Trent’s wedding?

I found this to be a good story, but I did feel that it moved a bit too slow for my taste. The opening sequence was heart wrenching between Seth and his dying mother and I felt bad for him that he had to give up the military career he loved so much so he could fulfill his mother’s last wish. I loved the attraction between Seth and Penelope and I had hoped things would all work out for Seth in the long run. Overall, this was an enjoyable story that helped pass the time.
