Hi Magali Frechette! Thanks for joining us today. I hear you have a debut book! What's your book "My Soul to Give" about?
It's about a widow who's in over her head when the demon she made a deal with turns out more trustworthy than the husband she's avenging. When a bond forms with him, she struggles between revenge and the dark charms of the devil she knows.
Do you like to cook?
No. I hate to cook, and am pretty bad at it. Even meals I can cook well, I hate lol
Is your home a place of order or chaos?
Do you have a newsletter? If yes, where can readers sign up?
I don't have a newsletter but I've promised myself I'll create one once I've got at least three books out.
Do you have any kids? Has your writing inspired them to read / write?
I have one son (now 12 years old). He prefers video games over reading, but when he finds a series he likes, he'll dedicate all his time to reading. As for writing, while he enjoys drawing and creating characters and stories in his head, he doesn't like to write or type. But he wants to be a game designer one day, so I'm sure he'll bring his stories to life one way or another.
What's next for you as an author?
I just signed a contract with my publisher, Evernight Publishing, for the sequel to my book. I'm also planning on submitting another manuscript that is in a different series, but same universe. I'm working on a dark romance as well - something that isn't fantasy at all, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that's received.
When it comes to your first draft, do you write via computer or notepad? or Both?
A bit of both, but my main draft is always on Scrivener, so I always end up transferring everything there.
What is your writing place like?
I mostly write at my desktop computer. It's not exactly clean, but nothing overly messy either on my desk. The computer is inside my room where I sleep since it's where I get the most quiet - I often listen to instrumental music in order to better focus. Curtains closed because glare and bright sunlight gives me headaches. But I'll also write on my iPad in my bed sometimes. Or at work when I get there early in the morning. Everywhere and anywhere is my writing place.
Do you have any pets? If yes, do your pets play a part in your writing?
I've always grown up with pets as they've always been a great comfort to me, but in the past three years since I moved to a new province, I've only been able to find no-pet rentals, so I haven't had any in quite some time.
At what point did you know you wanted to publish a book?
From the very first story I wrote back when I was twelve years old, I wanted to have a book published. But it wasn't until I was in university that I started seriously thinking about it.
What's your favorite restaurant?
Anything that serves pizza or seafood!
What is our favorite drink?
The one I'm still drinking is a salted caramel mocha frappuccino from Starbucks (but I love Ice Caps and Pepsi - just don't drink them anymore for health reasons).
Do you feel music has inspired your writing?
Yes - I've always listened to a variety of music ranging from The Beatles to Josh Groban to Marilyn Manson, Phil Collins, Elton John, Muse, Imagine Dragons, etc. Classical music as well - my favorite as a child was Vivaldi, and the classics are still at the top of my list.
What's your day job like?
Stressful. It mentally exhausts me to the point that I had to reduce my hours in order to balance my mental health and money. I have to be 'on' for five and a half hours, Monday to Friday, often dealing with difficult situations. It's definitely put a strain on my writing.
Is there a book you would recommend to other authors / aspiring authors to help them with their writing?
The Emotion Thesaurus series by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi is a must, and I also love Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to Edit Yourself Into Print by Renni Browne & Dave King.
What place is on the top of your to travel to list?
Japan. Scotland is a close second.
Anything else you would like to share?
If any reader would like to contact me, please feel free! I always enjoy chatting with fans. And don't worry: unlike my characters, I don't bite! lol
Do you have any books that are on your must read bucket list?
Must read bucket list? Not really, but I do have a long list of books I want to read... not sure I'll read them all in my lifetime, but I'll try!
What genres do you write in and what inspired you to write in these genres?
I write mostly in paranormal and dark fantasy genres just because it's always what I've enjoyed reading the most. Even when it comes to TV shows and movies, it's always gone toward anything unreality. But everything I write has romance as well - I can't seem to write anything without adding that genre to it.
It's been great having you. Thanks again for stopping over.
I would like to thank everyone who's ever bought or read my book - I appreciate it more than I could ever put into words (which is pretty ironic for a writer lol). Readers who leave reviews - good or bad - thank you for taking the time! I hope I can continue to write stories you enjoy!
